MASONIC CHARITABLE GIVING

Freemasonry is thought be the second largest contributor to charitable causes in the country behind only the National Lottery. Approximately 25% of charitable contributions go to non Masonic charities .Unlike other very worthy charities we do not rattle tins on street corners and all contributions come from within our own membership.

Through its umbrella charity The Masonic Charitable Foundation English Freemasonry particularly supports four main charity stems:-

The Grand Charity.
Which supports individuals in need , and a wide range of charitable causes including , for example, medical research by the Royal College of Surgeons , restoration work of numerous Cathedrals within the country ,mental handicap. drug abuse, age research, and emergency aid to counties affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. A full list of donations by the Grand Charity can be found via www.grandcharity.org or via www.mcf.org

The Royal Masonic Benovolent Institution
Which looks after the aged and sick and operates numerous residential care homes throughout the country which are available to both Masons and Non Masons?

The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys
This attends to the education of orphans , both Masonic and non-masonic

The Masonic Samaritan Fund
Provides cost of medical care where long waiting times are otherwise involved and also respite care.

Individual Lodges

All Individual Freemasons Lodges raise funds for charitable purposes to take care of the widows of past members and others who may be in distress. Individual members can ask the Lodge to support causes close to them and at Danehurst Lodge we have, for example, supported Macmillan Nurses, The British Heart Foundation, Little Havens Children's Hospice, various adult Hospices in Essex and the RNIB amongst many others. We also support Tender Loving Teddies which provides teddy bears for hospitals to gift to children who unexpectedly find themselves in Accident and Emergency Departments. The gift of a Teddy has a calming and reassuring effect on children frightened by the experience, and allows nursing staff to offer more rapid and effective treatment. Freemasons in Essex are proud to have recently presented the one millionth teddy under the scheme.

During 2013 our Master walked the length of the Great Wall of China to raise funds for his local hospice.
